Going Out Into The Wilderness

In church today the pastor was talking about when Jesus went out into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights and was tempted by the devil. He went on to say that we need to put in the effort to prepare our hearts for the wilderness as well. I always thought of being in a "spiritual wilderness" as working in a theological job, whether it be volunteering, working as director of christian education, or being a pastor.

Today I realized that my wilderness is my every day life as a Christian. The real world is truly a wilderness filled with temptation. Every day we are tempted to do things that go against what we are taught as Christians. There's so much temptation to overindulge in alcohol, take drugs, engage in promiscuity, and take the Lord's name in vain that it's rare to see people who consciously take a stand against these things. We find it easier to be a Christian in our own time and when we feel like it. It's so easy to keep our faith under wraps, as it is seen as a sort of overplayed taboo in our society now. As a family we always pray before a meal, even if it's out in public which is one thing you hardly ever see anymore. I catch myself skipping a prayer before a meal because I don't want to be that person who is different.

The sermon today made me decide that it's time for me to put more effort into my relationship with Jesus. I want to go out into the wilderness with an unapologetic faith and pride in my relationship with the Lord. In Matthew 5:16 it says "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.". I fully intend to put for the effort to let my light shine and to use the gifts that God has blessed me with to glorify Him, at all times, not just when it's comfortable for me.

Underrated

If heart, work ethic, and pure hustle counted as statistics in a basketball game Rachel Allison would be #1 in the Big 12, if not the entire NCAA. Allison is averaging 13.1 points per game, 8.6 rebounds per game, is #2 in the Big 12 in rebounds as well as #9 in steals. She has started 60/61 games this season for the Baylor Lady Bears and leads the team in steals. What the stats don't show is that she is hustling and working on every single play. Every game I have watched this season is the same, Allison comes out and is always active on defense as well as offense. She has a hand in the other teams face and is a workhorse underneath the basket on offense (even though she is usually out sized in the post). After almost every game the announcers talk about many other key players in the game, leaving out the hard work that Allison puts in that doesn't show in the box score.

This is not a post whining for more attention to be shown for Rachel Allison, nor is it a post to brag about her. I'm not even a huge Baylor Lady Bear fan (I've been a faithful Lady Raider fan since 1993). This is merely a post to show appreciation and respect for a player who gives 100% in every single area on the floor and shows the combination of athleticism and heart of a true athlete.

I'm Letting It Fade

"Let It Fade"
by Jeremy Camp

Have you been walking on a surface that's uncertain?
Have you helped yourself to everything that's empty?
You can't live this way too long.
There's more than this, more than this.
Have you been standing on your own feet too long?
Have you been looking for a place where you belong?
You can rest, you will find rest.
You can rest, you will find rest.

Let this old life crumble, let it fade.
Let this new life offered be your saving grace.
Let this old life crumble, let it fade, let it fade.

Have you been holding on to what this world has offered?
Have you been giving in to all these masquerades?
It will be gone, forever gone.
It will be gone, it will be gone

Let this old life crumble, let it fade.
Let this new life offered be your saving grace.
Let this old life crumble, let it fade, let it fade.

Let it fade.

Are you carrying the weight too much?, are you running from the call?
Let it fade, Oh yeah.

You can rest, you will find rest.
You can rest you will find rest.

Let this old life crumble, let it fade.
Let this new life offered be your saving grace.
Let this old life crumble, let it fade, let it fade.

Let this old life crumble, let it fade.
Have you been standing on your own feet too long?
Have you been looking for a place where you belong?

No Sleep For the Awesome

As exciting as starting a blog is, a short entry will have to do for tonight. At 2:30 (that's am) I will be heading to the airport with my family to drop my cousin off at the airport around 5 (again am) and then hit the road for a 2 and 1/2 hour trip back home! That means New Years Day will be spent sleeping, not blogging. At least this year I will remember my New Years!
